GST, receipts and tax invoices

Two settings decide what a receipt looks like: whether you're registered for GST, and whether you've added an ABN.

Quick answer

Go to Payments, then the Deposits tab. In Tax & GST, turn on Registered for GST (Goods and Services Tax) if that applies to your business. In Receipts, add your ABN (Australian Business Number) and trading name, then click Save Receipt Settings. A receipt becomes a tax invoice only when you have both: an ABN on file and Registered for GST turned on.

1. Two settings

A receipt's exact shape depends on two settings on Payments, under the Deposits tab, and they don't have to move together.

SettingWhereWhat it controls
Registered for GSTTax & GST cardWhether a receipt is a tax invoice with a GST breakdown
ABNReceipts cardWhether your ABN is printed on the receipt

2. Whether a receipt is a tax invoice

A receipt is titled Tax Invoice only when you have an ABN in the Receipts card and Registered for GST is on. The ATO says a business that is not registered for GST must not issue tax invoices, so with an ABN but no GST registration your receipts are titled Receipt and still show your ABN.

Leave the ABN field blank and every receipt stays a plain receipt, with no ABN and no GST line, regardless of whether the GST toggle is on. Receipts already issued keep the title they were issued with.

3. Whether GST shows on it

The Registered for GST toggle applies a fixed rate automatically, based on the country your business is registered in. There's nothing else to configure, and it saves the moment you check the box, with no separate Save button for this one setting.

CountryRate applied
Australia10%
New Zealand15%
Canada, Alberta5% GST
Canada, Northwest Territories5% GST
Canada, Nunavut5% GST
Canada, Yukon5% GST
Canada, Ontario13% HST
Canada, Nova Scotia14% HST
Canada, New Brunswick15% HST
Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador15% HST
Canada, Prince Edward Island15% HST

In Canada the rate follows your province. British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and Saskatchewan also charge a provincial sales tax on some sales and not others, so there we don't break the tax out of a price yet. For any other country, the toggle saves but doesn't change anything a customer sees yet, since there's no rate configured for it.

Note:The GST shown is the portion already included in your price, not added on top. Your prices don't change; the receipt just breaks out how much of the total was GST. A GST line only ever appears when both an ABN is set and Registered for GST is on.

4. What goes on the receipt

  • Your ABN, shown formatted for readability (for example, 51 824 753 556).
  • A trading name, printed instead of your business's account name, if you set one. Leave it blank to use your account name.
  • A footer, free text shown at the bottom, for example a thank-you note or contact details.
  • A sequential receipt number, unique to your business.

5. Sending receipts

Turn on "Email receipts automatically" in the Receipts card and a receipt is emailed the moment a deposit is paid. A no-show fee charged from a booking does not generate a receipt at all, automatically or by hand; receipts are only ever issued for deposits.

Leave auto-send off and receipts are still generated, they're just not sent automatically. You can send one by hand at any time.

Void a sale and its receipt is marked Voided. If you send it again, the copy the customer gets says Voided too.

  • Go to Payments, then the Transactions tab.
  • Find the row for that payment.
  • Click Send receipt (or Resend, if one has already gone out).
Note:Only admin accounts see this button, the same rule that gates refunds.
