Closed dates, public holidays and team time away
Special hours close the whole business for a date, the holiday setting decides which region's public holidays get suggested to you, and team time away blocks just one person, and they live on different screens on purpose.

Quick answer
To close for a single date, go to Settings, then Hours, find Special hours, and click Closed next to that date (or Add a date if it isn't listed). To block one team member instead, open Team, edit that person, go to their Availability tab, and click Add time away.
1. Three different controls, easy to mix up
- Special hours (Settings, Hours): one date, the whole business. Use it to close for a public holiday, trade different hours on Boxing Day, or add a late night.
- Public holiday suggestions (Settings, Business): decides which region's holidays get suggested to you in Special hours. It never closes anything by itself.
- Team time away (Team, a team member, Availability): one person, not the whole business. Use it for leave, sick days or training. This one is appointments-only; a hospitality booking has no team member attached to block time away from.
Your weekly hours repeat forever. All three of these are exceptions to that pattern, for one date or one person at a time.
2. Closing a date or setting special hours
Special hours is one chronological list on Settings, Hours, mixing dates you've already decided about with public holidays you haven't. An undecided holiday shows as "Open as usual". Nothing is closed automatically; you decide.
- Click Closed next to a date to shut it in one click. No bookings can be taken that day, whatever your weekly hours say.
- Click Set hours to give the date its own opening and closing times instead of closing it outright, useful for a shorter day or a late night. You can add several separate windows on one date.
- Click Add a date to set hours for a date that isn't a suggested holiday at all.
- Give a date a name if you like. Only your own team sees it.
The two verticals treat a special date slightly differently. For a hospitality business, hours set on a normally closed date run as one "Special hours" sitting, using the turn time and covers cap from your other service periods. For appointments, times only appear on that date if a team member also has working hours set for it.
3. Choosing which public holidays get suggested
The holidays suggested in Special hours come from your country and state, set on Settings, Business. With no country set, nothing is suggested until you add one. With a country Gaplessly doesn't yet have a holiday calendar for, you can still add any date by hand.
By default, only your own state's holidays are suggested. Turning on Show public holidays for every state, also on the Business screen, shows every region's dates instead, useful for a business near a state border, or one with team members who commute across it. Each suggested holiday is then labelled with which state it applies to.
4. Blocking one team member's time
Time away is scoped to a single team member and lives on the appointments side of the product only. A hospitality booking is tied to a table and a time slot rather than a specific person, so the Team page and this whole feature don't exist for a hospitality business.
- Open Team, select the person, and go to their Availability tab.
- Click Add time away and give it a first day and a last day (a single day works too), plus an optional reason.
- That person won't appear as bookable on any date in that range, no matter what their usual working hours say.
If existing bookings already fall in that range, you're shown them and asked to acknowledge before saving. Marking someone away doesn't move or cancel those bookings for you.
